The Tielman Brothers

The Tielman Brothers adalah band Indo-belanda pertama yang berhasil masuk internasional pada tahun 1950. Mereka adalah salah satu pelopor rock and roll di Belanda. Band ini cukup terkenal di Eropa, jauh sebelum The Beatles dan The Rolling Stones. Musik mereka kemudian disebut Indorock, perpaduan antara musik Indonesia dan Barat, dari basic Kroncong.

Tielman Brothers pernah tampil di Istana Negara Jakarta sebelum Presiden Sukarno. Mereka adalah anak-anak Herman Tielman dari Kupang dan istrinya Flora Lorine Hess dari Semarang. Karir rekaman mereka dimulai ketika keluarga Tielman pada tahun 1957 hijrah dan menetap di Breda, Belanda. The Tielman Brothers sangat terkenal di Eropa, terutama di Belanda dan Jerman.

Tielman Brothers memperkenalkan musik rock handal terlebih dahulu sebelum The Beatles. Aksi panggung mereka dikenal selalu atraktif dan menghibur. Pada setiap pertunjukan mereka, mereka selalu melompat-lompat, rolling/berputar-putar, dan menampilkan nada gitar, bass, dan drum yang cantik. Andy Tielman, frontman, bahkan dipercaya telah mempopulerkan atraksi bermain gitar dengan gigi, di belakang kepala atau di belakang tubuh jauh sebelum Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page atau Ritchie Blackmore.

Perjalanan musik dari Tielman Brothers dimulai di Surabaya pada tahun 1945, dimana empat bersaudara dan seorang adik perempuannya, Jane, senang bermain musik. Mereka memiliki kemampuan bermain musik dari ayah mereka, Herman Tielman, seorang kapten tentara KNIL.

Mulai dari Ponthon yang mempelajari kontrabas, saudara-saudaranya segera mengikuti mempelajari instrumen. Reggy mempelajari banjo, Loulou mempelajari drum, dan Andy mempelajari gitar. penampilan pertama mereka pada sebuah pesta di rumahnya, membuat kagum teman-temannya, mereka membawakan lagu-lagu Jazz seperti Tiger Rag dan 12th Street Rag. Sejak itu mereka sering tampil di acara-acara sederhana di Surabaya. Dilanjutkan dengan pertunjukan publik di seluruh Indonesia. Mereka terus bermain sampai pada akhir tahun 1957 keluarga memutuskan untuk pindah ke Belanda.

Di Belanda mereka menjadi salah satu band Belanda yang paling dikagumi sebagai pendiri genre musik yang disebut Indorock, dan dihargai oleh para artis musik pop.
